Features List

The following list outlines many of the features of the Intranet. If you’d like to know about any of these in more detail or if you have questions about other features of the silverorange Intranet, please feel free to contact us.

  1. Easy to Use Interface
The silverorange Intranet is designed around the user experience. A combination of features users need for everyday communication and an interface designed for quickly and easily accessing information make the intranet both powerful and simple.
    • Standards Compliant - The Intranet follows common web conventions (such as blue underlined links) so that there is a short learning curve. Coding is also generally compliant with W3C standards.
    • Speed - Speed is important for effective communication. The Intranet is optimized for fast performance whether you’re accessing it through a modem or over a LAN.
    • Browser and Operating System Support - Because the Intranet is entirely web-based, it can be accessed from any system and from any web browser.
  2. Security
The Intranet uses industry standard SSL encryption to ensure your information and communications are secure. The secure user-level access also enforces strict internal security so people can only access information they have permission to access.
  3. Projects and Folders
Content on the intranet is divided into projects. Projects are used for organizational purposes and for securing information. Each user can belong to several projects and can only access information in those projects. Each project can contain folders for further sorting information.
  4. Project Membership Options
Users can be assigned project membership options by an administrator. Most users only have normal access, meaning they can make and edit their own posts. Power users can be given editorial content editing access, stealth access, or access to add new folders to a project.
  5. Item Types
There are several different types of items on the Intranet. All types of items can contain file attachments. Users can post:
    • Messages - The general all-purpose post that contains a text message.
    • Tasks - A task can be assigned to a single user or a group of users. The priority, due date, and progress of a task can all be set and tracked.
    • Events - An event can be announced on the Intranet with dates and who should attend specified.
    • Work Reports - Employees can post work reports specifying what work was completed and the time used.
    • Checklists - Checklists can be created to list tasks that require completion. Completed and incomplete tasks can easily be tracked.
    • News - News articles, accompanied by a photo, can be posted with corporate, organizational, or departmental news to keep everyone informed.
    • Files - Files such as documents, images, movies, and templates can be posted for universal access and archiving.
    • Custom Item Types - If your organization uses a specific type of report or communication, please contact us to see if we can develop a custom item type for your use.
  6. File Attachments
Every item type can contain file attachments similar to email attachments. Easily share files with coworkers and post documents, graphics, presentations, and other files for review. Most common file types have matching icons for quick recognition.
  7. Replies and Threaded Discussion
All item types can become the start of a threaded discussion. By replying to a post, a thread is started so that it is easy for all users to follow the conversation. New threads can also be started within an existing thread to branch off with new ideas.
  8. Searching
The intranet has a powerful and flexible search tool for finding information. Users can narrow their search by project, date posted, user, and other criteria to easily find the information they’re looking for.
  9. Alerts and Notifications
A flexible Alerts and Notifications system allows users to determine the handling of posts. Users can choose to have email, instant messaging, or SMS alerts for specific types of posts, posts by certain users, posts with high priority, etc.
  10. User Preferences
Users can personalize many of the aspects of the Intranet. Contact information can be added, numbers of alerts can be adjusted, the way items are viewed can be altered, and numerous other settings are available.
  11. User Photos
Users can add their own portrait to the intranet using a simple image uploading and cropping tool. These photos add an important ‘personal’ quality to the communication on the intranet.
  12. Article Publishing System
For organizations that require it, the Intranet has a powerful articles system for publishing content. This system allows an organization to post information such as corporate documents, human resources information, and employee benefits information in one centralized location.
  13. Internationalization
The intranet is designed to function well for organizations spread across a diverse area.
    • Time Zones - Users can specify their local time zone. When they make a post, users from other time zones can see what time the post was made, both in their time and the poster’s time. This is important for coordinating work across different time zones.
    • Languages - Currently the silverorange Intranet is available in English, French, and Dutch. Each user can specify his or her own language for use. Please contact us if you’re interested in having the intranet be made available in another language.
  14. Management Tools
The Intranet is designed to be self-administered by managers in your organization. A powerful user hierarchy system allows a master manager to enable other administrators with specific permissions. At different levels, managers have the ability to add new users, define access levels, specify users’ access levels, create new organizations, create new projects, make new folders, and complete other management functions. Most management tools are located in context to make them intuitive for administrators to use.
  15. Modular Design
Many components of the Intranet are modular, so you can pick and choose the combination that best suits your organization. If you don’t require Work Reports, for instance, they can be seamlessly removed.
